Wildlife

This wildlife page is a collection of lucky sightings and shots from places I’ve lived and traveled. Lots of them come from birding trips or hikes where I was more than happy to try to capture these chance encounters. I still don’t have full species lists, but here are some notes for each of the sections.

The Colombia 2022 section is mostly reptiles from the Amazon, with one little guy from Minca.

The older Colombia collection includes:

Colombian red howler monkey (Alouatta seniculus)
Capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris)
Yacare caiman (Caiman yacare)
Orinoco crocodile (Crocodylus intermedius)*
Some butterfly species that I don’t know
Green iguana (Iguana iguana)
Eumastix sp. (Matchstick grasshopper)

*The Orinoco crocodile is one of the adult breeding crocodiles in the Wisirare reserve near Orocué, Colombia, and is the only captive animal in my photo galleries. This critically endangered species was nearly hunted to extinction, and its current population is estimated to be between 250-1500 individuals (wiki).

All of the pictures posted from Brazil were taken on a trip to the Pantanal. Unortunately, I didn’t get any good pictures of the massive tapir we saw on a night drive. Pictures include:

Black-and-gold howler monkey (Alouatta caraya)
South American coati (Nasua nasua)
Tufted capuchin monkey (Sapajus apella)
Crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous)
Capybara/chigüiro (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris)
Marsh deer (Blastocerus dichotomus)
Giant river otter (Pteronura brasiliensis)

Europe” means mostly France and the Dolomites in Italy. It’s a lot harder to find wild animals on this continent.

There are some Chamois, marmots, lizards, and a coypu/nutria, which is a large invasive rodent native to South America.

Finally, the USA gallery is a mix of shots from a few different regions. The fox, bobcat, and the baby black bears were all taken in my parents’ backyard in New England. The moose and pika were in the Tetons of Wyoming, and the butterfly was in Florida.
